13 Android tips and tricks you probably didn't know about

13 Android tips and tricks you probably didn't know about

Android is a great little operating system. It’s absolutely packed with great features, awesome hacks, and time-saving tricks.
But how much do you really know about your phone or tablet?

Sure, you can make phone calls and send texts, but we bet there is something in this article that you weren’t aware of.

Read on to find out!

1) Enable Developer Mode
Ok, this is one of the more widely known tricks, but it’s important nonetheless, so we are going to include it..

Navigate to Settings > About phone and tap on your phone’s build number seven times. You’ll get an onscreen countdown, eventually followed by a message saying “Congratulations, you are now a developer”.

2) Change the Animation Scales

For the most part, the latest Android phones already feel very snappy. However, after the latest Nexus 5X only shipped with 2GB of RAM, some users were left feeling a bit underwhelmed by Google’s hugely popular product line.

There are also lots of popular entry-level phones that come with slower processors and only 1GB or 2GB of RAM.

One solution is to change your phone’s “Window animation scale”, “Transition animation scale” and “Animator duration scale” from 1x to 0.5x. Granted, it won’t actually make your phone faster, but it will make it feel faster.

Go to Settings > Developer options and scroll about two thirds of the way down the list to find the necessary options (you’ll need to have first enabled Developer Mode).

3) Clear App Defaults
It’s annoying when a link opens in a certain app rather than in the browser. It could be a YouTube link, a tweet, or a Facebook page — you’ll end up waiting around while your phone shuts down Chrome (or your browser of choice) and fires up something else.

It’s easily fixed.

Go to Settings > Apps and find the app that keeps opening. Once there, scroll down to Open by default, press it, and then select Clear Defaults.

If that doesn’t work, try doing the same with your browser app as well.

4) Quickly Change Your WiFi Network

Oddly, how to quickly switch between WiFi networks is not very obvious. Sure, you can go to Settings > Wi-Fi and change it there, but there has to be a faster way, right?

Swipe down twice from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings menu, and instead of pressing on the WiFi icon (which disables it), instead press on the network’s name. You’ll immediately be given a list of all the networks in your vicinity.

That is, if your version of Android supports this.

5) Quickly Access the Quick Settings Menu

Speaking of the Quick Settings menu, did you know you don’t actually need to double swipe in order to  access it?

Instead, a simultaneous two-finger swipe will have the same effect.

6) Cast Your Screen
Are you a Chromecast owner?

If so, you can easily mirror your Android’s screen (and individual apps) by using the cast function.

Just open the Quick Settings menu and hit Cast. Your device will find your Chromecast (assuming it’s on the same local network), and you’re good to go.

It’s great for playing games on a larger screen, showing off photos to family and friends, or playing your music through a louder set of speakers. Though many apps, like YouTube, have a dedicated cast button within the app.

7) Locate Annoying Notifications

Do you keep getting an annoying app notification, but you’re not sure which app is causing it?

There is an easy solution — just long-press on the notification in question, and your device will tell you.

8) Manage App Notifications
Moving on one step further from the previous tip, after you’ve long-pressed the app you’ll see an information icon. Press it, and you’ll be presented with the notification settings for the app in question.

You can do things like block all its notifications, allow it to override priority mode, and make it hide private information.

9) Priority Mode

Priority mode is probably one of the most underrated and underused features on the entire operating system.

In short, it allows you to put your phone into quiet mode, but still allow some “noises” to get through. This could be calls, texts, or WhatsApps from specific contacts, notifications from certain apps, or important alerts such as alarms.

To set it up, go to Settings > Sound & Notification > Do not disturb, then select the options that you require.

It can be quickly toggled on and off from the Quick Settings menu.

10) Map Zoom
Ever need to use Google Maps one-handed? (No, not while you’re driving!)

Just double tap the screen and swipe up and down to zoom in and out — it’s a lot less fiddly than trying to pinch your fingers and hold your phone at the same time!

11) Smart Lock
Smart lock is super useful. It removes the need to use a keypad lock when you’re at home or in another “trusted” environment.

It can use GPS, certain networks, your face, or even your voice to prevent your phone from locking itself, making for a much faster and hassle-free experience.

Head to Settings > Security > Smart lock to set it up.

12) Screen Pinning

If you have kids using your phone regularly, this is a great way to make sure they don’t accident run up huge bills or set their eyes on content that is age-inappropriate.

Firstly, you’ll need to enable the feature (oddly, it is turned off by default). Do that by going to Settings > Security and scrolling down to Screen pinning.

To pin a screen, open the app, press the Overview button (the square) and then the pin icon.

You can choose to PIN-protect the pinned screen, if you so wish.

13) Secret Game

Another well-known Android Easter egg among old-timers, the secret game might not be so obvious to newcomers.
Lollipop and Marshmallow’s game is based on Flappy Bird; it has the same gameplay principle but has had an Android-themed makeover graphics-wise.

Head to Settings > About phone and tap the device’s version number several times. Eventually you’ll be presented with an on-screen lollipop or marshmallow depending on your operating system. Continue to rapidly tap the center of it and the game will launch.

10 Android photography tips for beginners

10 Android photography tips for beginners

There's an old saying about there being no such thing as a bad camera, only a bad photographer. While we aren't going to go that far, we can say that most any Android phone has a camera that can take great pictures — once you learn how things work and take a little time to do them.

Getting a good action-shot as it happens is an art to itself, but for those times when you want to take a few minutes and get the best picture possible we've got a handful of tips that can help.

Clean that dirty lens!

Seriously. A dirty lens is never going to make a picture better. Clean the glass that covers the camera just like you would the screen around front. A microfiber cloth is good for wiping away fingerprints and body oils, or you can get serious and use a cleaning fluid designed for electronic screens.

Just keep it clean.

Use the light you have correctly

The phone on your camera needs light to "see" the picture it's going to take. Some cameras do better with less light than others, but you still need some illumination. And you need to use it to your advantage.

Never point your camera at the light. Try to have the lighting behind you and above you, ideally pointing towards whatever it is you're taking a picture of. Often times that's not possible (especially indoors) but you should still move your feet and try the best angle you can use if possible.

Set up the perfect shot

By this we mean take a second to get just the right things in just the right places in your viewfinder.

Try to have the subject of the photo slightly off center, with a background that doesn't make the picture too "busy." Make sure the subject is far enough away from the background so that things behind what you're taking a picture of are not in crisp focus. A soft background with a sharp subject makes for a great picture, and it's something most any camera can manage to do.

Also, resist the urge to have nothing in the background. You don't want a picture of your dog or grandma to look like a product shot in a magazine ad.

You can never take too many pictures

Since you can erase things when you're done, take a bunch of pictures and go back later and find the "best" one. You will be surprised how much difference there can be from one shot to the next, even when you're sure you were still and the light didn't change.

Unless you're being rushed, take enough to be sure you get one great one. Then take a few more.

Use the right shooting mode

Shooting a sunset from the balcony? There's a mode for that. Same goes for portraits, or close-ups. Since there are few (if any) actual moving parts in a smartphone camera, software adjustments are used to make all the difference. Learn the different shooting modes for your phone (and your favorite camera app) and always use the one that suits things the best.

If in doubt, Auto is probably your best bet until you learn about using manual controls.

Don't use the zoom

Your smartphone camera has no optical (using the lens) zoom. Instead, when you use the zoom feature, it's doing the same thing as blowing an image up in an editor and cropping out the edge. This generally makes for grainy, pixelated pictures that you won't want to share with anyone.

If you need to get a closer view of that thing your photographing, moving closer to it is always better than using your zoom. Always.

Resist the urge to use the flash

The camera flash in our smartphones is getting better, but they are still best left turned off or used for a flashlight. They sit too close to the sensor and create harsh, washed out pictures with vampires in them.

Some folks try and be creative and cover the flash with tissue paper or translucent tape to cut down the light, but it's best to just not use the flash when you're trying to get a good picture.

Sometimes you have to use it, and sometimes it works fine, but most times you'll not like what you see when you use it.

Use a photo editor

Don't be afraid to edit your pictures after you've taken them. Even the best picture can look better with a few tweaks, and looking better is the final goal.

Find the picture editor in Google Play that you like the best, and learn to adjust the color, sharpness and saturation of your photos — as well as any final cropping and framing — to make a good pic look great.

It's easier than it looks, and you should think of it as the last step in the picture-taking process.

Find the right camera app

Your smartphone came with a complete camera application right out of the box. That doesn't mean you shouldn't take a trip to Google Play and try some others.

You'll find apps with effects, filters, stickers, and anything else you can imagine to enhance your pictures, as well as advanced apps that do things like add background blur or allow better control over the exposure values.

Try them out, and keep the ones you like installed for the times you need just a little more.

Patience is key

While these tips don't help getting a great picture of a speedy child or pet (there is a difference), if you take your time and set things up just right you can get some really good pictures from your phone.

Doing things like framing your shot and getting the lighting right is usually worth it when looking at the final result.

How to Study for Computer Science

How to Study for Computer Science

In most elementary schools, high schools and colleges, computer science is still an elective course. However, a growing number of education institutions – at every level – are requiring their students to complete at least an introductory course in computer science in order to graduate. We live in a society driven by computer technology. From school to work to socializing, understanding how computers work and how to use them is becoming more essential in many areas of life. The field of computer science takes computing to the next level. More and more students are pursuing an education in computer science and turning their knowledge into lucrative careers in business, engineering, and health care, to name just a few.

If you're interested in preparing for career opportunities in computer science, we recommend getting started with your education as soon as possible. Most high schools now provide a selection of classes in computer science, and the majority of accredited colleges offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in computer science and programming. Whichever career path you choose, one thing is certain, learning computer science requires a lot of dedication and studying.

Below we'll explore tips, strategies and skills for learning and studying computer science.

Don't procrastinate.
Yeah, yeah, you've heard it a million times, don't procrastinate. We'll let us say it again, "Don't procrastinate!" Don't procrastinate studying, don't procrastinate completing projects, and don't procrastinate studying for exams. If you have any inclination to procrastinate, you may want to consider a different field of study. Procrastinating is the worst possible thing you can do in a computer science or programming class. When you receive an assignment or project, get started on it right away. That way, if you don't understand the logic or can't figure out an error, you'll have time to get help from your instructor or someone else.

Jump in with both feet... or don't jump in.
A student fascinated with video games, 3D animation or computer technology may decide to get into computer science, only to find that most of their time is spent programming – and that they're miserable. That's not to say that computer programming is by any means miserable, but if you're not interested in programming, then you aren't really interested in computer science and probably won't enjoy it. If you like computer games or animation, there are other career paths, such as Computer Game Design, Graphic Arts, Technical Writing, and even Business Management, that will allow you to work in these industries. Just know that if you pursue an education in computer science, you need to be ready – and eager – to start programming.

Learn your math.

Computer science and math go hand in hand. If you don't like math you may find computer science challenging. Software engineers for example rely on discrete math to work out algorithm efficiency and complexity. Computer hardware engineers will use discrete math and automata theory when designing computer circuitry and finite state machines. Computer science researchers use math-based probability and statistics to perform measurements and comparisons. Even video game programmers use math when developing 3D animation. If you want to learn and study computer science, you must also learn math.

Don't cram.
As we already pointed out, procrastination doesn't work when it comes to studying computer science. The same holds true for cramming. All-nighters the day before a deadline, whether it be for a project or exam, will not work. Much of the work you'll complete as a computer science student will be practical in nature. It will require thought, energy, problem solving and time. If you attempt to stay up all night the day before a deadline, you'll get tired, your code won't work, or you'll end up failing your exam the next day. Computer science is a field of study where it's imperative that you stay on top of things and keep working throughout the entire semester. It's not to say you need to spend every waking moment studying computer science. It is to say that you need to study consistently throughout the year.

Don't be a loner.
It's important to be self motivated and have the ability to work independently, but it's just as important to be able to work as part of a team. Learning to study in a group and work with a team is essential. Studying with a group as you pursue an education in computer science offers a lot of benefits. One of the biggest benefits is that it will teach you how to work as part of a team and to be a team player. Once you graduate and enter the workplace, it's more than likely you'll work as a member of a team. Working with a team takes skills and it will require you to share the "awesome" ideas and the code you've written with others, but it's necessary. You're code and ideas are not always going to be right, and working in a team can help you improve.

Other benefits of forming a study group and working with a team while studying computer science include:

ability to cover more material
share knowledge and talents with one another
improve notes
more effectively study for exams
get help with difficult concepts
review each other's code for errors
make learning fun

Learn to write more than just code.
Programming is at the core of computer science, but you also need to know how to write to be successful in this field. For starters, as you program you'll include comments in your code to help others understand what your code is supposed to do. This may seem simple, and it is for the most part, but really good programmers include consistent and clear comments that make their code more valuable to their team, as well as the companies that employ them. If you decide to pursue a career in software engineering, you'll likely be expected to write requirements, specifications, and test plans, in addition to developing top notch code. As you advanced through your career in computer science you may also be asked to develop technical reports, research papers, and more. To be successful in computer science you need to become a good programmer, but you also need to learn how to write. Take the time to develop good business and technical writing skills as you study computer science.

Take advantage of all resources available.
Don't throw in the towel the first time you get stumped or hit a road block. There is a plethora of resources for help learning computer science. In this day and age of the world wide web, the Internet provides thousands of online resources from forums to tutorials to virtual tutors that can help you work through even the most challenging computer science problems. So don't despair. The next time you have a computer science problem that is giving your trouble, just "Google" it. Google is your friend and is a great resource for finding information and resources that can help you work through computer science problems.

Many of the same strategies and skills used to effectively study business and other technical subjects including chemistry can also be employed for studying computer science. We highly recommend reviewing these study skills sections as well.
